Diana Freeman - Baer of Oakland , California recently get wind a hummingbird ’s nest in her G , right outside her door . She decided to photodocument thelife cycleof these Bronx cheer .

Male hummingbird will have a set territory during mating season and will court females who enter into their distance by doing dissimilar display . The shuttle display includes making a buzzing sound with the vibration of his feathers as he hovers in front of the female person . The dive display is done by fly to great altitude , diving down , and construct another buzz with his butt feathering during a drum roll in front of the female . These displays are performed multiple times before copulation .

After mating , the female chooses a tree branch and begin to manufacture a nest that is about the size of a ping - niff orchis . Once completed , the female deposits her clutch of ballock , which is two white eggs each the size of it of a jelly bean . Many get materials are used to make the nest , and Diana reports that this particular nest is made from lichen , twigs , spider silk , bootleg hair that came from their dogs , and what seems to be man-made blond hair .

The mother will incubate the eggs for about 15 - 16 twenty-four hour period and protect them from marauder . She viewed Diana as a threat while she took the above picture and began diving at her to get her to go away .

Once the baby think up , the mother recall food for them . Though adult hummingbird mostly trust on sugary nectar to fire their high metabolisms , the hatchlings are also in need of protein to make grow muscles and farm . They are feed flaccid worm including spiders , aphids , or insect eggs . The female parent will continue to sit on her babies for protection .

As the boo arise , the siblings start to feel cramp in the nest and even begin to stretch it out . The mother does not have the elbow room or the need to sit on them anymore , though she keep on to fertilize them .

If the nest survives the year , it can be used again during the next breeding time of year . Many hummingbirds do not make it past their first year of life for a mixed bag of reasons , but both domestic and savage felid are their top predator .
