A couple of old age ago , Ann and Jeff Vandermeer put out a request for recommendations : they were putting together a sketch anthology of brusque science fiction stories , and it would be a monumental project . Their workplace is now all over : The Big Book of Science Fiction will be released in July , and they ’ve told us what will be included in the Word .
This is going to be a monumental tome , one that clocks in at 1,200 Page and more than 750,000 words , which Vintage believe is the single largest book of its type . After request story , the Vandermeers got to study , comb through century of anthology and submitted stories .
The anthology covers an telling comprehensiveness of the genre as well : the early story represented is ( Update : Wells ’ story is the other ) H.G. Wells ’ , “ The Star , ” from 1897 , and runs all the way up to 2002 ’s story from Johanna Sinisalo , “ Baby Doll ” . 97 account make up everything in between , including the likes of Clifford D. Simak , Philip K. Dick , Arthur C. Clarke , Isaac Asimov and Bruce Sterling , while some lesser - known author , such as Edmond Hamilton , Katherine MacLean , and others are included .

There ’s also some rummy omissions here : I do n’t see anything by Robert Heinlein , Nancy Kress , C.L. Moore , Francis Stevens , and some others that I expected to see . It ’s not entirely surprising , given the distance of the book .
Update 9:00pm : Jeff Vandermeer write in to observe that Heinlein ’s works were n’t included due to the Heinlein estate ’s limitation on reprint his stories .
Here ’s the intact listing of the stories that will be included .

mention : this is n’t the finalized mesa of content , but a list in alphabetic order .
