The ultimate elbow room to stay in contact with your friends while in the wild ? This Garmin Rino 650 MT allow you to track each other ’s positioning and communicate by articulation or text , outside cadre service .
What Is It?
TheGarmin Rino 650tis a combination handheld 5w GMRS / FRS radio and feature - pack GPS unit . This one comes preloaded with Garmin ’s 100k Topo and Bird ’s Eye Satellite imaging that can be load from your computer . When multiple Rino building block pass on with each other , they begin sharing positioning datum for each social unit to the other units , making it easy to visually see where each person with a unit is .
Who’s It For?
Anyone on a group outdoors trip-up of any form in which the party may separate for any reason . A hunter who want to tell his collaborator where he is , where the animal is , and where he need to go , all while remaining whole soundless . The overprotective parents who want to keep tabs on their children while they hunt down aimlessly through the woods . straw hat , climbers , hiker , fisher , cyclists , motorcyclists , outdoors blogger …
Had Wes and Ty been carrying these while pack the Lost Coast last winter , they would n’t havelost their friend Mat .
Just about anyone who gamble out of doors has used a GPS , and has at least at one point thought how commodious a wireless would be when they did n’t have one .

Design
With the double antenna horns , I can kind of see where the “ Rino ” name come from . The size of the Rino 650 MT is reasonably large , but when you compare it to the 2 devices that it would otherwise be replace , it is pretty reasonable . The screen is adequate to register the maps , but I ’ve been spoiled by the 5 ” display of most smartphones now , and trying to expend this as a stand alone GPS units leaves me wanting the large silver screen of my telephone set . We ’ve run short over how you could turn yourSmartphone in a sinewy off the grid GPS gadget .
Because this matter is about an inch smaller than a crimson brick , you most likely wo n’t be couch it in your pocket , but will alternatively be using the Garmin add clip and snap ring . At least they knew that it was swelled and apply you a solvent . IPX7 waterproofing provides heartsease of mind and add to the overall timbre soma of the equipment .
Using It
We take the pair of Rinos upMt Whitney , theGrand Teton , andhunting in the High Sierra , testing out each of the different features . Garmin be intimate to gas the “ baseball glove favorable ” touch covert display , which does puzzle out pretty well . What this really means is that it uses the sometime resistive technology of touch screens that require you to entreat hard to register a touch . Garmin has done an splendid job though of tweaking this touch screen to ferment more like today ’s modern capacitive screen door found in most every smartphone .
Multi - Day Hiking : With an expected barrage fire life story of 14 minute , you will have to select when you want to employ the twist , and when to leave it off . As we were head up Whitney , we left the radios on to test out the tracking , this get along in handy when we each went up to the summit meeting from trail camp at different prison term . The top photo demonstrate Sam and me on the elevation while Valerie and Courtney were still at trail coterie .
NOAA weather wireless is highly utilitarian and can be lifespan save . you’re able to set up warning signal to be broadcast as before long as NOAA post them out . Setting off for the peak , but do n’t see the thunder clouds rolling in beyond the mountain , this alerting could pull through you from getting caught in a storm .

Garmin show beautiful pictures of double-dyed lead of you and your partners ( above left ) , but my experience was a little more jagged ( above right ) . We were hiking side by for most of the wage hike until track summer camp . My unit was the blue track , and Valerie was in red . I am not certain if I was missing a scene to leave ceaseless polling on or what , but this is pretty different . Upon further investigation , the building block may only spread its locating when a radio broadcast is activated . If this is in truth the case , you may involve to lead up a radio broadcast whenever you desire your partner to have intercourse where you are . Each building block has the power to “ poll ” other unit manually for their location , but this seems like it should be something that is done automatically based on what the Garmin images show .

Hunting : The good feature of the Rino occupation of wireless , when used for hunt is the “ Federal Reserve note ” and wireless data send . While you’re able to take in where your partner is , you’re able to also send him waypoints of where you spotted an animal or type up a immediate note to tell him where to go , without bring in any racket . You ’ll have to perfect your twittering skillz though , each banker’s bill is capped at 13 character .

As before long as you send a Federal Reserve note , waypoint , or other data , it is broadcast to across the radio channel , mean that anyone who is on that same channel will get the subject matter . When stalking an animal , it ’s usually pretty simple commands that you are trying to relay to your partner , and we found it to be highly utile .
Range : Garmin claims a range of 20 miles with a perfectly percipient line of mess , this would be like standing on the top of a mountain and talking to someone on the vale flooring . To get the most out of the range , you will need to crank up the superpower on the equipment to propagate with all 5 Isaac Watts . On my first trip , I had it set at .5 watts , and chain was not very sound .
My hope was to prove this on the Grand Teton , but the weather maintain us off the summit meeting . I did , however , get to experience some moderately surprising results when it came to range of mountains and signaling . While in a mountain valley , behind a pop out rock-and-roll face , I was still able to talk to Valerie who was about 4 miles away and 5,000 feet below . I would not have expected to reach her while being this deep in a canyon . checker out the above function for location during this communication , notice the contour stemma of the hills and valleys .

An important thing to keep in mind , is that this gadget is not a SPOT , nor a satellite phone . It can only communicate over receiving set and is limited by strain of sight . Do not expect this to be your saving good will and call for aid when no - one is around .
Garmin BaseCampis the computing equipment software package ( PC / Mac ) that you will apply to download the BirdsEye Satellite mental imagery and put it onto your gimmick . Using this software package is kind of terrible . When selecting an area for download , you are limited to about 230 Mb of datum per country , this check to about 360 square statute mile in the “ high-pitched ” setting of point , and 90 square international mile in the “ eminent ” . Downloading is sorely slow too . I have a normal high - focal ratio internet connection and it took 30 minute of arc to download those 230 Mb from Garmin ’s imagery servers . The only deliverance good will is that you could download multiple mathematical function at one prison term . If you have a trip come up , do n’t plan to do this the Nox before . It seems odd to me to put a limit on the size that you’re able to download , especially considering this gimmick has 4 GB of internal repositing and allows you to summate an SD card for more map storage .
BaseCamp does have a clustering of features , like geotagging all of your photograph by synchronise the meter stamp of your photograph with your Global Positioning System trail .

These are all the segments of BirdsEye Imagery that I had to download to cover the area I plan to hunt . It is definitely a big area , but get to skip through hoops to get it was thwarting and time - run through .

have the power to visually see where the other person is has been extremely utilitarian in every situation . When I was on the summit of Mt. Whitney and expect for Valerie to make her way up , I could just face on the radio and see where she was ( as long as we had made a radio call ) . Conversely , when I was climb the Grand Teton , she could keep check on our travelling and know when we were run to back .
Where this gimmick really smooth is in hunting , when you want to communicate with your hunting partner while remaining mum .
The IPX7 valuation means that you could drop it in a current or use it in the rain and not vex

It may be called the Rino because it is jolly hefty . At 11.3 ounce , and just under the size of it of a stock reddish brick , there is no casually putting this thing in your pouch .
The charge plate screen door on the twist is pretty soft and suffered a abstruse pelf all the path across when we were stalking through thick thicket on a hunt .
The Rino has a mini - USB port on the back of it , but you’re able to not use that for charge . There is a freestanding accuse port and you must use a Garmin add power cable that is hardwired to the power chaw . you could ceaselessly power the gadget with this courser , but it seems so ridiculous that if there is a mini - USB porthole on the gadget that you could not expend that for charging it . If you wanted to recharge these in the field or use them for more than a twenty-four hours , you would be good off purchase theAA bombardment packfor $ 30 and a band of rechargeable AA batteries . I do n’t recollect the designate substance abuser is a multi - day thru hiker , but recharge should be soft . Most people will only be using these one day at a clip , so recharging each night wo n’t be a job .

The included software , Basecamp is slow and clunky .
One of my 2 units froze and I had to send it back to Garmin . client military service was pretty well-to-do to wreak with and sent a replenishment unit within a week . The software program always seems to be the Achilles heel of Garmin . As with all other Garmin product , frequent update are required to keep the equipment running smoothly and the UX is , at best , thwarting .
Should You Buy It?
Do you already carry a wireless and a GPS when you go outdoors ? Would having a single unit of measurement lighten your load and streamline your outfit ?
At$550this twist is not cheap . But compare to the price of a quality , standalone radio and GPS navigator , it may in reality save you some money .
Garmin has afew other modelsthat just differ in features . The $ 600Rino 655thas an added 5 Mp camera which does not appeal to me , I will always have a better camera on me . TheRino 650is $ 500 and essentially same as the 650 t , but it has only 1.7 GB of internal memory instead of the 4.5 GB of the 650 thymine and it does not include the 100k Topo single-valued function or the BirdsEye Satellite Imagery subscription , a$30 value per country . Unless you do n’t need planet imagery , it is kind of a no - brainer to opt for the 650 t. Lastly is theRino 610at $ 350 , but it only has a 1 - watt radio , 1.7 GB of intimate storage , no Mount Rushmore State - card enlargement , and does not include the $ 65rechargeable Li ion batterythat comes installed in all the others .

Despite some of the downside of using this building block ( mostly from the data processor side ) , I am still admit this with me on every search trip and relying on it when I fetch it with me hiking as well . have the peace of mind to be able to locate someone when they may not otherwise be able to communicate could potentially be life history write , as long as they are in range of mountains .
