“ Murder on the Planet Express ” give us one of the few episodes about paranoia that actually make the viewer palpate paranoid . Whether that ’s good or spoiled is up to the viewer . I recollect it was good . Or did I ?
Most movies or bear witness about paranoia and a culture of mistrust bomb to channel the feeling to the witness because they ’re mainly thriller , drama , or Art That Makes a Point . We know the regulation of all of these genres , and so they ca n’t take us with precariousness . In clowning — peculiarly fruitcake comedy — anything can happen , which can allow for the viewer far more off - balance than more serious genre .
We see this clearly in “ Murder on the Planet Express , ” when the Planet Express bunch develops trust matter . Each employee suspect another of some minor crime , and it bugger off bad enough that the Professor drive them all to go on a incarnate team - building retreat to work on their trust issues . When the drawing card of the hideaway tells them to pick up a hitchhiker , and the hitchhiker turns out to be a homicidal shape - stir monster , the team has to choose who to trust . Anyone reading this can see the flight hatch in the plot , but even if there were n’t one , it ’s a scientific discipline fiction clowning show — deus ex machinas are easy to come by .
Oddly enough , this ready each scene more tense . Since we know no existent impairment will add up to the role , anyone could get eaten at any clip in any scenery . It also clear all the comedic stings more funny . They ’re a bit like the honest-to-goodness Warner Brothers cartoons — hold us a solidification - up that lets us expect one thing and then veering off in a dissimilar way . If there ’s one job , it ’s that the show keeps the uncertainty coming too long . The difficulty with The Lady or the Tiger ending is that by their very nature they leave the audience unsatisfied , so the decrepit element of the episode is build into the plot . The centre of the sequence , with the monster eating random members of the crew , is glorious , though . ( And did anyone else catch the Wernstrom Reverse Scuba Suit cameo ? )
