Last dark ’s Fringe resolved a mystery that debase back to the beginning of the serial : the cause of Walter Bishop ’s mental disorder . All it aim is our team of dimension - hop opposition supersoldiers and and a boatload of nous surgery .
It ’s a Bit Drafty Back Here : At long last , we observe out what our interdimensional supersoldiers have been up to since their drawing card ( alias Thomas Newton ) got his cryogenically frozen head thawed out . Apparently it involves poking around some poor mental patient ’s brain and yank out the appropriate clod . I almost expect them to go all Hannibal Lecter and sautee and give it to him , but that would be a waste of safe grey matter .
They Were cultivated , Even : The supersoldiers are sort of the anti - ZFT ( Where are those guys , by the way ? Are there still adherent of William Bell execute around performing acrobatic feats of gruesome science ? ) . They clearly do n’t want to call attention to themselves , at least not yet . But they ’re very capable of slip up ; the Fringe team only catch onto their cerebral thievery because the soldiers were nearly take in in the act .

A - Head of the plot : Otherworldly flashbacks aside , Olivia ’s taken a back ass investigation - impudent to Walter , Peter , and even Astrid this season . With the exception of the bowling back street guru subplot ( another fellow we have n’t run into for a while ) , she ’s flown mostly under the radiolocation for being arguably the show ’s main character . But at least she managed to take in that Thomas Newton ’s frozen head is now walking around on a consistency without crazy prompting from Walter .
move Crazy stool You a Better Father : Once again , I wonder how exhaustively William Bell had this all planned . He orchestrated Walter ’s madness , his reunification with Olivia — did he also tear the strings on Walter ’s progressively heartrending rapprochement with his Word ?
So That ’s Where I Put Those Memories : Ah , that ’s why Walter ’s crazy . I guess I always supposed we ’d find out the generator of Walter ’s madness , but I had take over it was something mundane ; maybe a mental partitioning as a consequence of disgrace combined with heavy drug use . Or maybe he had entered the founding to avoid prosecution and had gone disturbed later .

But this being Fringe , I should have expected there was a weird skill cause behind Walter ’s fuzzy genius . He in reality had private memory board — in the signifier of mental capacity tissue paper — related to the interdimensional gateway removed from his mental capacity and kept alive inside other people ’s brains . This also serve explicate Walter ’s fixation with psychotropic drugs ( although even as a fledgeling he was sniffing benzene ) . Like the food and melodious triggers , Walter uses them to help jump the damaged connection of his brain . I doubt he ’ll lay off using them now , though .
We ’re Not Fixing You : Thomas Newton has recovered the contrary pieces of Walter ’s mastermind and reconstruct them is using them to attempt to restore the connector in his brain in hopes of see the secrets of the room access between universe of discourse . The problem is , Walter is n’t making the right neuronic connections , even once the tissue paper is placed back inside his encephalon .
How Are thing On Your Side ? : We got a decent demonstration in the first place in the time of year from Nina Sharp about the snowglobe macrocosm crashing into one another , and it seems that , scatty preventive , the other world might be the one to sting it . A blight has already killed the tree , and the place is only getting more awful . The supersoldiers are n’t evil so much as ruthless ; they just do n’t need their universe to die . But the folk on the other side are probably more motivated to win the interdimensional war as they ’ve suffered the effect longer .

Olivia ’s impuissance : As interdimensional supersoldiers go , Olivia is kind of weak sauce . mayhap Walter is indispensable in the coming war ; that would be a good reason to hedge your stake and save him , even if it means letting the First Wave leader go . But fit in to Olivia , she saved Walter because he ’s her supporter and it would be too painful to lose him . mayhap Olivia has been encode with some congenital allegiance to Walter , but if not , every person she do it and loves is a financial obligation to her universe ’s survival .
I ’ll Put Them Where Only I Can incur Them : It ’s not surprising that William Bell is the one who occupy Walter ’s memories and hid them ( with Walter ’s apparent cooperation , no less ) . But it ’s suspicious that only he be intimate where to find Walter ’s memory . Did he leak this information to the First Wave ? Is he playing the two side against each other ? Or did he leak the information just to reestablish Walter ’s functions , know the First Wave would not succeed .
Astrid Action : We ’re back to a quieter , more clerical Astrid this episode , but I guess I should be happy she ’s not getting flap up or outmaneuvered by Walter .

What Now for Walter ? : Since this was a Walter - centrical instalment , I ’m forgoing the Walter of the Week in favor of wonder what ’s next for our favorite mad scientist . The First Wave was n’t able to reform Walter ’s neural pathways , but will those footpath reform on their own ? Will Walter step by step get back his memories and remember his engagement with ZFT and his chronicle with Olivia ? And if being dotty really made Walter a respectable male parent , will his increasing sanity make him a worse one ?
