The Middle Ages was a hairy fourth dimension in England . Not only did you have to be leery of tike revolting , Vikings pillaging your townsfolk , and the Black Death , you also apparently had to worry about undead zombie get up up , too .
In a new discipline , published in theJournal of Archaeological Science Reports , researchersfrom Historic England and the University of Southampton title they have found the " first good archaeological evidence " that Medieval England believed in the undead . They hint villager in the settlement of Wharram Percy , North Yorkshire used to issue - up , dismember , mutilate , and cauterize the remains of their dead . After matching up these finding to diachronic text file , they think it ’s probable they were mangle out of the fear they could otherwise arise out their graves .
The 137 pieces of bone excavate at Wharram Percy come from at least 10 freestanding individuals and date back to between the eleventh and 14th C CE . They show burn German mark and numerous other marks that appear to have been slice with a tongue . However , the marks were particular uneven ; they were around the skull and neck . This suggests that they were not butchered , perhaps for meat during a shortage , but were violently attacked to dismember the body as much as possible .

Some refinement mangle the dead of unsuitable outsiders as a mark of disrespect . However , these corpses were turn out to be local people .

Those who had head an " evil " lifetime or had a score to settle with the living were especially prone to this behavior . Medieval writer documented that people were advised to decapitate , burn , or efface the organic structure by any means necessary to keep this from happening .
" The idea that the Wharram Percy bones are the remains of corpses burnt and dismembered to block off them walk from their graves seems to fit the evidence best , " Simon Mays of Historic England allege . " If we are right , then this is the first good archaeologic grounds we have for this pattern . "
