Give a thousand Ethiopian small fry – who have never check a printed word lease alone played around with expensive consumer technology – a tablet , and what happens ? They hack it . evidently .
The amazingOne Laptop Per Child schemehas been offering up Motorola Xoom tablets to tyke in germinate land for a while . OLPC founder Nicholas Negroponteexplainedhow they ’re rolled out , and the shock they have , while he was at MIT Technology Review ’s EmTech conference last hebdomad :
“ We go away the boxes in the village . unsympathetic . Taped shut . No instruction , no human being . I think , the kids will trifle with the boxful ! Within four minutes , one kid not only opened the boxful , but found the on / off switch . He ’d never watch an on / off switch . He power it up . Within five days , they were using 47 apps per child per day . Within two week , they were singing ABC songs [ in English ] in the village . And within five months , they had hacked Android . Some moron in our organization or in the Media Lab had invalid the tv camera ! And they figured out it had a photographic camera , and they cut up Android . ”

That , that is just arresting . To go from never having seen a written password – remember , the towns these kid grow up in have no street signs , no paper , no food packaging – to hacking an Android tablet in five months shows how inquisitive and adaptable the human brain is . And it makes me so very , very glad . [ Technology ReviewviaDvice ]
