Gascón, 52, had previously skipped several major award shows since facing backlash, and didnot attending the Oscar nominee dinnerat the Academy Museum on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

She did, however, attend the recent 50th annual César Awards in Paris on Friday, Feb. 28, marking herfirst appearance at an eventfollowing backlash toold social-media postsof hers. She was nominated for best actress at the French event.

Mexico-set musical-thrillerEmilia Pérezheads into Sunday’s 97th Academy Awards asthe most-nominated film, with 13 nods including Best Picture. Gascón, who plays the titular role, is thefirst openly transgender starto be nominated for Best Actress.

In an apologetic Feb. 6 Instagrampostapparently in response to an interviewEmilia PérezdirectorJacques Audiardgavecondemning her words, Gascón wrote that she hoped her “silence will allow the film to be appreciated for what it is, a beautiful ode to love and difference."

“I sincerelyapologize to everyone who has been hurtalong the way,” the actress added.

Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee and Gascón’s costarZoe Saldañasaid in January that she was“really sad” over the controversy.

“I don’t have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group,” said Saldaña, 46.

Later, she shared she was“disappointed” in Gascón’s actions, but still “proud” ofEmilia Pérez.
