Harry , Hermione and Ron Luke , Rani and Clyde confront the Nightmare Man , with super - spectacular speechifying . refashion one of Voyager ’s lightheaded sequence was a eldritch move for Doctor Who ’s kid - friendly tailspin - off , but I defy you to watch that scene without squeeing .
The Star Trek : Voyager episode , of course , was “ The Thaw , ” in which a campy buffoon trap Harry Kim and a bunch of redshirts in a never-never land , where he torments them with nightmare and clobber . It was camp when Voyager did it , and it was camp when the Sarah Jane Adventures did it , too . This time around , alternatively of being called Fear The Clown , the evil clown - boldness guy is name the Nightmare Man , and he fixates on Luke , using Luke ’s nightmare to become topnotch - powerful and insert the real existence .

The main trouble was the one that Sarah Jane Adventures has get along up against before — unless they ’re name the Joker , evil clown villains just are n’t that scary or efficacious , really . ( Although now that I think about it , was the Nightmare Man a clown or a dumb show ? He might have been a pantomimist , except that he sing a lot . ) In any case , he was beyond campy , into a whole new realm of post - post - post - ironical fatuousness , with the cackling and the laughing and the unearthly stress . ( Julian Bleach , who played the Nightmare Man , also play the uber - campy silent moving-picture show baddie in one of the worst Torchwood episodes . Although he was okay as Davros . )
This episode had a few things going for it , though .
For one matter it was a courteous idea having Luke be the one who ’s at the gist of the Nightmare Man ’s machination , because he never dreams – the Bane never disoblige to give him that power . It contribute a nice excess bed to the creepiness of his shivery dreams , the fact that he ’s not used to dreaming at all .

This story did a pretty adequate problem of connect in the “ Luke going off to school day ” affair with the Nightmare Man ’s plot to keep apart him from his friends and take on on his fears of being alone . I also liked Rani and Clyde ’s dreams in the second half , showing their fear about what they ’d grow up to become , and Rani ’s reverence of having to tell on the great unwashed she cares about once she ’s a journalist .
And because the installment built up Luke as this topnotch - awesome son who was made by aliens to put down the humankind and winds up save it instead because of his mum and his friends , it was probably the perfect government note for Luke to go out on . Now that he ’s fully Harry Potter - ized , it ’s the perfect time for him to disappear for a while . Although he will be missed — just as we still miss Maria , even though Rani is great too .
I also do it the continuing sniping between K-9 and Mr. Smith — and the fact that all Sarah Jane necessitate to connect them up is a standard USB corduroy . The next meter I ’m make a bad dream , I ’d really have a go at it to have K-9 shaft in and excuse to me how to get out of it . That would be star .

All in all , this was another courteous installment of the little whirl - off that could . I do overleap the show ’s first season , when there were some opponent with a scrap more bite to them , like the Kudlak . I still love this show , but I feel like its first season was its high point in terminus of potent storytelling and non - cardboard enemy . But what did you think ?
And in case you miss it , here it is :
