principal Creative Officer and comics author extraordinaire Geoff Johns does n’t just spell comics ; he has also written TV episodes for show based on comics . In fact , he ’s penned tonight ’s episode of the hit CW series Arrow , “ Dead to right , ” in which Ollie must keep his mummy from assassinate his best acquaintance ’s daddy as an estranged family member and an onetime enemy return to Starling City . Johns spoke with us about tonight ’s sequence , how the show ’s in good hands , and when we might see Ollie ’s quiver arsenal expand .

Io9 : What can you tell us about tonight ’s episode , “ Dead to Rights ” ? What should people be looking for ?
Geoff Johns : It really focalise on the human relationship between Oliver and Tommy . Tommy ’s dad Malcolm Merlyn is part of it in a cock-a-hoop , large way , and through him thing between Oliver and Tommy … get ’s just say there are lots of reveals . There ’s things that happen , revelations that happen to these graphic symbol that will modify their direction in the show for the respite of the serial publication . That ’s really fun , and it was a fun chance to be able to write that material .
Arrow is a heavily serialized show that ’s understandably building fit in to a program . How much of “ idle to Rights ” is you , and how much was just following the architectural plan ?
Executive producer Greg Berlanti , Andrew Kreisberg and Marc Guggenheim and I all broke the story together , just like we do every sequence . It ’s a quislingism , just like anything else . I ’ve been working with the guy cable a little bit , so knowing where Andrew and Marc are taking the show and knowing what we could attain was in force . But there ’s a still few things in the episode that amount out by surprise that I think are really interesting .
What can you tell us about Laurel ’s mom ?
It ’s a very abbreviated scene , but yeah , Laurel ’s mom does return . sports fan of the mirthful book know there was an original Black Canary — Black Canary ’s mother was the original Black Canary — so that ’s kind of sport to do . And she fare back with some info that is going to be a little backbreaking to process , but it ’s go to send out a lot of people ’s imagination whirl . And it ’s certainly go away to play out over the subsequent episodes of the time of year .
Was there something specific that drew you to this instalment , or a rationality they asked you to write this episode as opposed to one of the others ?
Well , it ’s pretty action - large . And there ’s a pile of characters in here , especially a band of DC characters — Deadshot , China White , Dinah Lance , on top of Oliver and Tommy and Felicity Smoak and everybody else — but there ’s a passel of DC character in there , and I reckon mostly it was the fabric and the fact that Glen Winter [ who directed two of Geoff Johns ’ Smallville episode ] was directing . The producers knew I want to work with Glen again , and I think Greg Berlanti felt it was an opportunity for all of us to get back together . I ’m opine that ’s how it come about .
Deadshot seemed to die jolly ignominiously early in the season . Was it your idea to bring him back ?
It was always a programme . I mean , since Day 1 , it was “ Hey , do n’t kill Deadshot , he ’s too cool of a character , he ’s got a lot of story in him . ” And the agency his last scene was shot , he looked very bushed . That was something we talked about instantly . “ He ’s coming back . We ’ll figure out a way , he ’s coming back . ”
How much input signal have you had on the season in world-wide ?
I have to give all the course credit to Greg and Andrew and Mark . They really execute the show , they have a plan , they have a fib they ’re telling and I just come into supporter and bounce ideas back and forth whenever I have the time and whenever they want me to come in in . I help out where I can , but those guys merit all the deferred payment .
Any specific ideas you gave them ?
I spent some clip on solidification with Andrew Kresberg when we were shooting the pilot and he go on and on — he just loves this hooey . Greg hump it , and Mark loves it — they all really make out the rootage fabric . So they ’ve retrieve a really unspoilt proportion in introducing fibre . I ’ve shake off out suggestions , and we ’ve all kind of worked on the bigger DC movie — and that ’s lot more of that large DC picture to come — but it ’s a collaborative drive .
Arrow is pretty immensely unlike from amusing Green Arrow mythos . What ’s been your favorite and least best-loved change ?
God , that ’s severe to say . My most favorite change … [ writer ] Andy Diggle and [ artist ] Jock did it in the Green Arrow : Year One comic , but I bonk how expansive the mythology on the island is die to be . I cognise a lot of the plan and what ’s going to bechance on that island , and I remember the mystery of all those tattoos and mark paint a route mapping of what Oliver is going to go through there . I just think that extra deepness of his mythology is grand .
I absolutely make out Thea ; I retrieve she ’s a great addition . I enjoy the character , and I consider it apply Oliver a great family dynamic . I really enjoy the supporting plaster bandage , and the mythology and everything else , and I think it adds a mickle to Arrow . And I do n’t cerebrate it ’s a error that the comics are going to dive into the island more , just like the show is now .
My least favourite change … I have to admit , I really miss Green Arrow ’s masquerade party . The domino mask is sappy , but I really like the mask .
really , Ollie ’s dotty island backstory and his suffer casting seem to be Arrow ’s main forte .
That ’s why I say the supporting cast and the mythology … I have intercourse Green Arrow , and I love him in the comics , but the show has already opened up the island , and accept a page from Diggle and Jock ’s Year One , certainly , but it ’s able to search the island in a deeper way than the cartoon strip .
And I suppose supporting casts in funnies are lack . I cerebrate a lot of the time in comics , all we have are people in costumes talking to other people in costumes , superheroes talking to superheroes and supervillains , and that ’s it . So to see this Arrow mold get elaborate like this , between his mother and his baby and Diggle and bring in a beyond - unknown character like Felicity Smoak into it … I just conceive the guys have create a terrific cast . And the cast themselves have done a marvelous chore . Tonight ’s sequence , for me , stop some of their respectable carrying into action .
Of Arrow ’s hurl , Ollie ’s bodyguard / confidante / partner Diggle might be the best . Is there any chance he makes his way to the comic strip ?
I think it would be dandy if he did . We ’ll see . Jeff Lemire ’s writing the book mightily now , and there ’s a plan . I do n’t roll in the hay if he ’ll bring them in or not , but I consider it ’d be bang-up . Although Diggle is in the digital Arrow comic – the whole Arrow writing staff , with Andrew and Mark , write the digital comedian every week .
Are we ever going to see some real illusion arrows ?
We had the recording pointer , and we had the computer connectivity arrow ( laughs ) in the pilot . There are some magic arrows . I do think back Mark mention at some point they have ta figure out how to do the packing baseball glove arrow . Like , there ’s receive ta be a elbow room to do it . They think about it all the metre . Again , the masses on the show love the source cloth , so they ’re going to essay everything they can to get it in there . If they can actually pull it off it some way , it ’ll be awful .
And hopefully by the clock time the serial publication scarper its line — and hopefully it ’s a long course — we ’ll get to see a lot of those whoremonger arrows , include some we ’ve never take in before .
Last but for certain not least , why is it called “ Arrow ” and not “ Green Arrow ” ? Why no “ green ” ?
It ’s a long answer . But obviously it was debated among everybody , but at the goal of the day , everybody just want something very clean and ripe to the tip . No pun intended .
