Cobra Kaihas alwaysbeen about two thing : tell a fantastic storythat mix new type with onesfrom the originalKarate Kidmovies , and being a nostalgic love letter to those first four movies .
verbalize to io9 before the debut ofCobra Kai‘s 6th and final time of year , creators Jon Hurwitz , Josh Heald , and Hayden Schlossberg recite us about their favorite cryptical , cryptical - cutKarate Kidjokes they ’ve snuck into the show over the years , as well as a few of the towering goals they dreamed about when the show started and ca n’t believe they were capable to actually reach .
Germain Lussier , io9 : You guy rope know I bed the recondite - cutKarate Kidstuff and , in these first five episodes of season six , there are a few , including the one in the arcade and calling Johnny a sure name . Do you guys have a favorite mo from this time of year or previous ones that are such deep - cutKarate Kidthings , you had to get them in there ?

Two Karate Kid villains show off, but is this the best call back? - Netflix
Josh Heald : I stand for , the uncanny one that is so crowbarred in there is …
Jon Hurwitz : I knew you were gon na say it . [ Laughs ]
Heald : In the laser tag way . [ time of year three , sequence five ] when Cobra Kai was take over the defunct laser tag location and Mitch is wearing a backwards rucksack full of warm beers . And he provide them beer saying “ Who ’s for a warm one ? ” Which is just a uncanny pedigree in general fromThe Karate Kidwhen Johnny and the original Cobra Kais rip up on the motorcycle overlooking the beach and they ’re being offered quick beers , by Tommy , right ? And that ’s a terrible matter to pop the question somebody . “ Who ’s for a affectionate one ? No . No one . And we feel like that was a perfect jocularity to toy where Hawk was like , “ You play warm beer , that ’s ugly . No one wants a strong beer . ” That ’s probably my favored , like stupid little thing we put on the show .

“Get him a bodybag,” indeed. – Netflix
Hayden Schlossberg : One of my favorite uses of a callback is in time of year two , episode six when Billy and all the Cobras are together and it ’s a very poignant instalment . We purposely made it a more dramatic episode and it terminate with , you know , Tommy dying , and we treat it with all this gravitas and it made sense at the end when he has his idle body there , they zip him up in the body dish . He was the guy who said , “ Put him in a dead body bag . ” So that was like the stark combination where if you ’re not aKarate Kidfan , it all makes sense and it ’s really kind of heartfelt and sad . And if you are aKarate Kidfan , there ’s like a dark jocularity that ’s materialize .
Hurwitz : That one ’s my favorite . And the other one , I ’ll just say just the concept of — we explained Terry Silver ’s behavior inKarate Kid 3with cocaine . [ Laughs ] Just when he ’s explaining kind of like what was die on back then and how ludicrous some of the stuff you did was .
io9 : So we ’re nearing the end ofCobra Kaiand I ca n’t even imagine the whiteboard of idea you guys had at the beginning of like , “ If we get further , we get to do this . Mike Barnes , Terry Silver . ” So I ’m curious , what ’s the one affair you really wanted to do at the beginning that you ’re so happy with how it turn out when you eventually get to do it ?

Cobra Kaiguest star Elisabeth Shue – Netflix
Schlossberg : Oh wow . I ca n’t really say because it ’s the last five episodes of the show which are the payoffs of everything that we started . And I recollect after time of year one , us blab about time of year two , but really get to figure out where we were croak . We started talking about a world tournament geezerhood ago because we have it away that that was one way to amp thing up . But figuring out where all the characters will land , at least the primary character , is something that we ’ve been peach about for a long clock time . And it was crazy to actually film those scenes where you ’re escort these pivotal variety of final second . And you know , we ’re really frantic for fans to see that .
Up until now , I would just say prior to time of year six , it was just seeing Terry Silver ( Thomas Ian Griffith ) taking over the Valley . I sleep together there ’d be a period of meter where there ’d be the dark clip in the Valley and Silver would get to reign as B. B. King . And you get to see what would have happened ifKarate child 3ended differently . And that was something that , I call up , you hope you get to , because in the first couple of season , you never know if the show will kick off and do well enough — because we knew that would always be something that would have to come late in the show . We did n’t desire to discombobulate Terry Silver into the mix early on . So everything involve Terry Silver and how that story finished was something that you ’re just , you ’re thankful that you get to a season five to begin telling that material .
Hurwitz : I think everything that Hayden said I would harmonise with , but one thing that I ’ll just shed out there is Ali . Ali ( Elisabeth Shue ) showing up , that was something that early on we were talking about bringing her back . As immature fans ofThe Karate Kid , we were disappointed not to see her after the first movie . So it was one of those thing that we were really driven to do is bring her back into the account . And when we got to do that , that was something that was really special and I ’ll never blank out those days on set .
