Carrie Vaughn is the author of the mega - successful Kitty Norville novels — but she did n’t want to reside on her laurels . alternatively , she fight back to break out of the “ urban fantasy ” category , which she had n’t even known be until she was put into it . Her story is enchanting .
Talking toWestword , Vaughn , explains how she discovered she was writing urban fantasy , and how she fought to be allowed to write other thing :
The industry had identified this genre of urban illusion , and my publishing company decide to push my record as part of it , ” Vaughn says . “ I got a clang - course education in urban fantasy . I of a sudden had to look up all these other writer I was opine to be in a genre with . I instantly had to become an expert in this musical genre I recognise almost nothing about . I was doing all these consultation and being postulate , ‘ So , have you always been into vampire and werewolves ? ’ And my resolution was , ‘ No , but I am now . ’ …

Vaughn ’s dream had come true , but at a price . As much as she loved share Kitty ’s risky venture , werewolves were n’t the only matter she could save about . The job was , by from the blanket multifariousness of short story she still wrote and publish , her body of work did n’t reflect her compass . When her publishing firm show no interest in buying her other , non - Kitty novels — admit Discord ’s Apple , a modern-day phantasy with a mythic sharpness , and After the Golden Age , a story about the daughter of two world - famous superheroes trying to find her own place in the world — she made a move that might have been brave or crazy or both : She leave her publisher .
Vaughn explains , “ I get into an argument with my original publisher . They wanted me to do Kitty and nothing else . I wanted to do mint of thing , not just Kitty books . ” Still , her decision to leave behind did n’t come easy : “ It was traumatic . Trying to explain it to multitude was ruffianly , because it did n’t make any sense . This publisher got me onto the New York Times bestseller list . Why would I let that go ? The answer was , I had to leave so that I could have the form of vocation I desire . I want to be Carrie Vaughn the awesome writer , not the chick who indite the Kitty books . ”
In the end , Vaughn ditched her earlier publishing firm and went to Tor Books , which now publish her Kitty novel as well as Discord ’s Apple and After the Golden Age . [ Full disclosure : Tor is put out a couple of my novel , too . ] Getting name as part of the blistering musical style of urban fantasy , at a time when Sookie Stackhouse and other heroine were making it handsome , help Vaughn to become a publishing sensation . But it also threatened to restrict her choice as a writer .

In the same article , Warren Hammond , author of the KOP extraterrestrial detective novels ( which we reviewedhere ) , utter about trying to appeal to both enigma and science fiction sports fan — and obtain that science fiction fans did n’t need to read mysteries , and mystery buff did n’t require skill fiction . The whole article , in which Vaughn and Hammond talk about their careers , is well worth reading . [ Westword ]
