Who would have think that Grant Ward would become my favorite fictional character on Agents of SHIELD ? Really . And all it take was one surprising reveal . Last night ’s sequence was a nifty thriller , in which we discovered that monsters who know they ’re monster are actually the most horrifying . Spoilers off !
It ’s looking more and more as if Grant Ward really is just straight - up evil , and the nasty he gets the more we love him . ( Please let this not be a secret mission trust to him by Nick Fury , to infiltrate Hydra . Please . ) Ward is a Hydra agentive role who looks up to Garrett ( Bill Paxton ) and has zero ruefulness about betraying Coulson ’s squad — only his feelings for Skye are tangible , although that just make them creepy .
Grant has joined the eternal sleep of the team at Providence , the confidential Canadian base that Nick Fury guide Coulson to — because Grant needs to get Skye to decrypt the backbreaking drive that has all of the squad ’s research on it . ( Including the information on the miracle Kree soap that take Coulson back from the beat , and saved Skye . ) Grant puts on a pretty adept show of being the injured last survivor of the Fridge attack , and middling much nobody questions him .

Until Eric Koenig ( Patton Oswalt ) decide to subject Coulson ’s whole crew to a super high - tech Trygve Lie detector that uses weird free - associate interrogative to get inside your header . And while the rest of the team ’s answers are jolly revealing , it ’s great watching Grant outwit the mental test — you really cogitate he ’s go to get himself catch , and Koenig seems ready to waste Grant ’s mental capacity out . But then Grant utilise his beloved of Skye to save himself , saying that he ’s there not because of obligation or loyalty to SHIELD , but for Skye . Which is true — come to get Skye is Grant ’s mission , plus he does really dig her . So that ’s truthful enough to get him off the hook .
After Skye figures out how to hack into the NSA satellite feeds and get telecasting of the onset on the Fridge , Grant ’s game is about to be up . So he kill Koenig and hide out the body — not take in that Skye can track people via their lanyards . There ’s a brilliantly skin - crawling scene where Grant confess that he ’s not a good person , and that he actually hector his youthful brother — it was n’t his older brother , as he previously claim . Ward essay to put his moves on Skye , who tries to play along as best she can .
Everything that was kind of off - putt about Ward before , including his uncanny sense of separation and his fixation on Skye , is just perfect now that we know he ’s actually a Hydra psychotic person . His attempts to be wizard and seductive are like watching a Terminator render to toy .

And you have to hand it to Skye — she play it cool . And Chloe Bennet does a great job of demo how she ’s repulsed and freaked out after come up Koenig ’s still - bleeding - out body , but she still plays along with Ward . She mark the penny Ward put over the room access to the room where he stashed Koenig , and is smart enough to put it back in its spot when she leaves . Unfortunately , when Ward insists they take the squad ’s spurt off to decrypt her hard drive ( which can only be decrypted when it ’s in a finicky localization ) she has no choice but to go with him .
But what makes Ward so scarey is that he know he ’s a total illegitimate , but he ’s willing to misrepresent remorse and even self - execration to get closer to his fair game . ( Or maybe it ’s not entirely fake . )
And meanwhile , the installment ’s other plotline is also about a monster who announce that he ’s a devil . Marcus Daniels ( aka Blackout ) is a cat who can absorb electrical vim from anything , including mass ’s bodies , and he ’s obsessed with Audrey , the cellist whom Coulson used to have a thing with . In an interesting line of latitude with the Grant - Skye scenes , Marcus tells Audrey that he ’s a monstrosity but that she can save him — decently before Audrey delivers him into a SHIELD snare .

The other interesting parallel between the two behemoth in this episode is that SHIELD made them spoiled — Grant , by broadcast him on so many abrasive “ Specialist ” missions , Marcus by experimenting on him and amplify his powers . Was the experiment on Marcus due to SHIELD being infiltrated by Hydra , or was it like Coulson ’s resurrection — just a consequence of SHIELD overreach and being kind of evil in general ?
Either way , this case is personal for Coulson , who act at first that he ’s just choose a modest squad after Marcus because it ’s their duty to clean up after the Fridge was violate . He put out Marcus the first time , and that was the start of his family relationship with Audrey , whom we heard about in passing in The Avengers . And now , Coulson does n’t want Audrey to see him because she ’s starting to move on with her life after his death — and he would n’t be able-bodied to stick around in any subject .
The bit where she ’s go through out and he says he ’s always with her — and she writes it off as a delusion — is in reality quite moving .

Audrey is an strange soul in this day and years : Someone who still believes in SHIELD after they were declare a terrorist organization . Since SHIELD saved her , and she still love and desire Coulson , she sees them as the honorable guys — although perhaps she would n’t if she love Coulson was alive and obscure from her . At first , our hero attempt to pretend to be the CIA , which is just sad .
Other random bits from this episode : Triplett , who ’s becoming one of the show ’s best type , is the grandson of a Howling Commando . Huh . Skye ’s giving birth name was Mary Sue Poots . Coulson get under one’s skin the best line : “ Nothing bad ever happens when you figure out with something prognosticate ‘ darkforce . ' ” The Fitz / Simmons schism proceed — Fitz is so committed to Simmons , he ’d want her to be in a box on a desert island , but Simmons is stepping out and flirting with Triplett .
And finally , there ’s Melinda May , who reaches something of a turn distributor point in this episode . She secernate Koenig in the prevarication - sensor picture that she ’s only here on this base for Coulson — and then Coulson slam her yet again , saying he ca n’t trust her after she kept the the true about his resurrection from him while he was suffering . He continue her off his squad on the Portland mission , and she decide there ’s no ground to puzzle around after all . ( Thus leaving Skye and Koenig alone with psycho guy rope . )

As the episode ends , we see May on the route in Ontario , getting picked up by an erstwhile lady who taunts May with the fact that her own spy brass is still intact . And it turns out that May is look for SHIELD ’s # 2 , Maria Hill — but she does n’t want to kill Maria . She just wants to have … a trivial confabulation .
