When enough contrarians actively withstand mainstream trends , their nonconformance may actually ordinate . Ergo beardsplosion .
NeuroscientistJonathan Touboulcalls it “ the hipster loop ” or “ the hipster force . ” His enquiry involves neurons that , Touboul says , behave like flower people , in that “ they fire when every neuron around them is subdued ; or they fall silent when every neuron around them is confabulate . ” But appendage of society do not have contiguous knowledge of ethnical trends . Neither do nerve cell straightaway recognize what other neurons are up to . As The Washington Post ’s Jeff Guo puts it :
[ Touboul ’s ] key insight is that the great unwashed ( and neurons ) do not instantly perceive what is mainstream . There ’s a delay . And in situations where the delay is big enough , the contrarian can unknowingly synchronize with each other .
Touboul has write some fun mathematical models to go along with this insight , on the pre - print repository at arXiv . Over at WaPo , he and Guo walk us through what we can discern from good example like this one :

… a random imbalance will be detect after some time and all anticonformist soul will tend to disalign to this trend , irrespective of the fact that an increase proportion of them do and therefore knuckle under a cleared bias towards the diametric trend . This will be detected at later times , leading to a reciprocal switch , and these oscillation will sporadically repeat . Despite their feat , at all times , anticonformists flunk being disaligned with the legal age .

The hippie are still resile from the mainstream , but each holds an outdated construct of what the mainstream is . Because they are slow to respond , they end up all looking likewise , and all changing fashions at the same clip . ( satire of sarcasm ! )
Note that this is actually different fromout - group homogeneity bias , our leaning to face at people beyond our social circles ( hipster or otherwise ) and glorify “ they ’re all the same . ” In fact , out - grouping homogeneity bias could be report as the very engine that drives hipsters toward synchronisation . As we recently explained :

All other groups are locked in a stultifying or even threatening homogeneity .
