After postingmy little memoir about working onDune , a lot of hoi polloi demand to see more of the pre - production art . I have a duet of hundred images , far more than I could post here , so I decide on a selection that showed how the facial expression of the picture evolved from conception to completion .

In the first there were sketches … one thousand of vignette … Almost all of these were done by the brilliant output room decorator Tony Masters . Most of my design work involved props and weapon ( I ’ve included two of those drawings ) .

These were eventually incorporated into the production picture I created . Some demonstrate scenes as they might come along in the ruined film , others were renderings of property and space vehicle …
Many of the spacecraft were then turn into 3D poser by my married woman , Judith ( who some of you may remember asCaptain Judikha ) . Although all of these were made of composition , some had workings part . For instance , the wings of the Atreides ‘ thopter folded . These example were use by the mechanical drawing section as they drew up the design for the effects modelers .

Here is another view of her epitome Navigator :
By the way , here is an unused concept for a mask to be fag out by the first or second stage navigators ( I forget which they were theorize to be ) . Sadly , I no longer remember who create this , though it may have been Carlo Rambaldi —
Judith also construct models of many of the set , specially the most complex ones , such as the gigantic set built for the scenes inside the seitch .

Everything finally scent up in the drafting section , where beautiful plans were drawn up . Every circle , ballistic capsule and prop had a elaborate blueprint . Here is a section of the draftsmanship for the Harkonnen ‘ thopter …
Once the blueprints were approved , things moved on to the limited effects , airscrew makers and twist crowd . Here is what the prop shop looked like , along with one of its products ( a Fremen motionless electricity accumulator , in sheath you were about to postulate ) …
The modeling department was in charge of creating the ballistic capsule …

While the expression crews built and decorated the sets …
Bob Ringwood , the costume designer , had his own shop where he create everything from his own lottery . Here is Ringwood at work :
It was a lot of fun perplex to try on some of the costumes . Sometimes this was to put on a show the film ’s financial backer , sometimes it was in lodge to test out a costume to see how it was run and sometimes it was just for play . Here is Judith trying on a few thing :

And one of the administrative helper …
The only prison term I ever got involved in any of the costume work was in creating the art for the backcloth stilsuits . These were nothing more than union suits with a black pattern printed on them . Here I am create the prototype artwork …
